Should You Build a Raised or a Grade-Level Deck?

The prospect of building a new deck is exciting because it opens so many possibilities, one of which is whether you should have a raised deck, or a grade-level one. In today's post, Deck Kings takes a look at the differences between the two.

Raised Deck

Raised or elevated decks are constructed above ground level, offering an unobstructed view of your surroundings. This is the ideal type of decking when the scenery has a beautiful view, whether it's a mountainous landscape or a beautifully manicured backyard. A raised deck is also ideal for property with a sloping backyard, where platforms that conform to the terrain would be impractical.

Since raised decks are more complex in terms of design and construction, they tend to cost more compared to grade-level decks. There is also the inherent risk associated with elevated platforms, so raised decks need to conform to building codes pertaining to safety railings, ledger boards and stair design.

Grade-Level Deck

Grade-level decks are built on relatively flat ground, and are ideal for spaces that are intended to transition from the indoors to the outdoors. Yards with sparse vegetation can benefit from a grade-level deck, as it can serve as a clean and safe space for children to play in or for entertaining friends and family. Because they are structurally simpler than elevated decks, grade-level decks typically require less material and labor, therefore they tend to cost less and have a shorter installation timeline. These decks can also help improve accessibility, as ramps can be built into them without dramatically changing the design.

There are, of course, a few things that some may consider as setbacks. A grade-level deck wouldn't improve a view that you don't already have from the ground. Also, grade-level decks tend to have minimal airflow under the boards, which makes them more susceptible to moisture-related issues like mold and wood rot. Such issues can be mitigated by regular maintenance, as well as the choice of material.
